Pennsylvania Core Standards (3-4)

The curriculum at CAILA for grades 3 and 4 is aligned to the Pennsylvania Core Standards. The Pennsylvania Core Standards mirror the content and rigor of Common Core, but reflect the organization and design of the Pennsylvania Academic Standards.

PA Core Standards

These standards, which develop the following skill sets: critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication, and creativity, are robust and relevant to the real world and reflect the knowledge and skills our students need to succeed in life after high school, in both post-secondary education, and a globally competitive workforce.

  • Kindergarten through 2nd grade utilize Houghton Mifflin’s Literacy by Design, which is a comprehensive language arts curriculum that targets the following foundational literacy skills: phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Each unit links literacy skills with standards-based science and social studies content that will be explored further during their respective instructional periods.

  • 3rd and 4th grades conduct book studies which include a wide variety of genres. Book study groups are formed to open up opportunities for books to be read and discussed with teachers and peers which allows for students to expand their reading comprehension and participate in collaborative discussions relating to various forms of text.

  • Guided reading is completed daily in all grade levels using the Fountas & Pinnell framework. Fountas & Pinnell's goal is to support each child's development of self-initiating actions. They will be able to apply to a range of texts of similar difficulty. With daily teaching, the teacher helps the child climb the ladder of text difficulty with success. In addition, CAI Learning Academy utilizes a whole-school comprehension skills model in order to maintain consistency throughout all grade levels.

  • VoWac (Vowel-Oriented Word Attack Course) is a phonics program that has been implemented to complement the phonics portion of Literacy by Design. VoWac uses the Orton-Gillingham approach and a unique CLOVER method to identify and master vowel patterns in the English language. Additionally, VoWac provides instruction in word decoding and spelling strategies through step-by-step, direct instruction.

  • In Kindergarten through 2 grade, Imagination Station (Istation) Reading Intervention Program is used. Istation is an adaptive software program that allows students to work independently on enhancing phonics and reading comprehension skills. Adaptability during both instruction and monthly assessments allows students to focus on areas in which they are weakest, so they can move from struggling to advanced readers.

  • In 2nd through 4th grades, Lexia, also an adaptive reading software program, is used daily. Lexia allows students to work independently to develop critical reading and language skills through individualized, motivating learning paths.

  • Addison-Wesley enVision Math has been selected to develop learners who are able to use their math skills in real life settings. Concepts are presented and reinforced through problem-based interactive learning, step-by-step visual representations, and interactive math stories.

  • The adaptive software program Dreambox Learning is utilized to provide students with personalized instruction. The program consists of highly engaging, student directed learning environments that develop conceptual understanding, fluency, and problem-solving skills.

  • Full Option Science System (FOSS) kits provide our students with hands on and engaging science lessons. Through active investigation, students in our K - 2 program explore topics such as balance and motion, air and weather, pebbles, sand, and silt, solids and liquids, and animals, plants, and insects.

  • Science Studies Weekly magazines are used in Kindergarten through 4th grades which contain standards-based science lessons.  These include introductions to and expansions of science concepts as well as other effective features such as:  full-color photo illustrations, current event / technology articles, biographical features on important scientists, and instructions for hands on labs which reinforce the principles taught in the various lessons.

  • Inspire Science, utilized by our 4th grade students, is designed to help spark curiosity in students and inspire the next generation of innovators and inventors to ask more WHYs, think more critically, and become creative problem solvers. With built in literacy and math connections, students are prepared for real-world problem solving and instruction designed for 21st century standards and learners.

  • myWorld Social Studies connects social studies content and literacy instruction for students in K - 2nd grade. Students learn to make meaningful and personal connections with their local communities, develop an understanding of history, and examine how our choices can impact others around the world.

  • Studies Weekly magazines are also incorporated into the curriculum to provide students with an additional resource to learn about topics such as being a good citizen, rights and personal responsibility, maps and globes, presidents and patriots, American history, world history, and the difference between consumers and produces.

  • Maps for the Classroom is also incorporated throughout all grade levels in order to enhance geography instruction and further develop students' geographical skills.
